Lack of price transparency in e-commerce:
A Comparison of Last.app, Shopify, and OIDO
Anyone looking to open an online store today is faced with a bewildering array of providers. A closer look reveals a complex web of commissions, monthly fees, app costs, and payment fees that can quickly overwhelm even experienced merchants.
In this post, I compare three different approaches, including the often-overlooked payment processing costs and the new, detailed pricing structures.
The direct comparison: What is the true cost?
Scenario: €10,000 monthly revenue, 200 orders, average cart value €50

The true costs lie in the total
There is no one-size-fits-all “best” solution—it depends on your business model:
Last.app Starter might be a good fit for merchants with low order volumes (under 100 orders/month). With higher volumes, the additional order fees become a significant factor.
Shopify remains the choice for businesses willing to pay extra for customizations via third-party apps. The double commissions (platform + payment) plus extension app costs make Shopify an expensive provider.
Oido-onlineshop.com is ideal for merchants who value cost transparency. The commission-free service is a decisive advantage.
Before you decide:
- Calculate your actual total costs – platform + payment + apps + order fees
- Check which features you really need – not all extension apps are necessary
- Consider your order volume – with Last.app, the 100-order limit becomes critical
- Pay attention to payment fees – these often account for up to 50%+ of total costs
- Consider the initial investment – costs for deployment, setup, and launch vary widely: from €0 with OIDO to €500 for remote deployment with Last.app, up to Shopify’s recommendation to hire a web agency, which can run into the five-figure range.
Unfortunately, transparency in e-commerce is still the exception. Often, the information on providers’ websites does not offer enough detail to calculate the true total costs.
Note: Prices and terms are subject to change. Payment fees vary by country, currency, and card type. Check the latest information directly on the respective platforms before making a decision.
